Kids ‘n Comedy

Dec 21, 2010 by

Kids ‘n Comedy

Create and perform your very own stand-up routines! Learn about improv, comic acting, and stand-up comedy with the  fabulously funny Kids ‘n Comedy at the Gotham  Comedy Club (check out the great video)!

Available sessions 1, 2 and 3.

Instructor David Smithyman.

Failing to ever fulfill his true potential as an Australian child actor, David Smithyman moved to New York City in 2004 to try his delicate, uncalloused hands at stand-up comedy. Whilst at NYU, he was privileged to study joke writing from working writers whose credits included shows like Seinfeld, The Simpsons and Late Night With Conan ‘O Brien. Emerging from NYU with a degree in Television Writing and an award in comedy writing, David continued to perform at  Carolines and various clubs and bars around the city, until his control issues kicked in, and he began co-hosting and producing his own monthly comedy show, We’re Nice People!, in the Lower East Side (now in it’s second year.) Currently, David divides his time between writing jokes, reading comic books, and teaching stand-up comedy to hilarious teenagers at Gotham Comedy Club. He also does an excellent Ian McKellen impression (but only if you ask him nicely.)

He’s played in downtown NYC clubs such as the Knitting Factory and Tonic, and leads and arranges for the Columbia Klezmer band. He was a 6-year cast member of the Off-Broadway production of Kids and Yiddish. He is currently the manager and baritone saxophonist for the Ayn Sof Arkestra, a 16-piece, neo-klezmer avante garde professional big-band, featuring GRAMMY Award-winner Frank London of the Klezmatics and Carnegie Hall jazz-sax virtuoso, Greg Wall (whose album was one of the ten best CD’s of 2002, according to Jazz Times Magazine). Catch them the last Monday of every month at the Max D. Raiskin Center (325 East 6th St, NYC – http://eastvillage.thelocal.nytimes.com/tag/ayn-sof-arkestra/). He attended the Rimon Conservatory of Music in Tel Aviv, Israel, and is currently a sophomore in the BFA program at CCNY for Jazz performance.
